They may work for the automotive industry, but Kent-based automotive business consultancy, Qube, has recently signed up to the government-backed Cycle to Work scheme, with three members of the team already enjoying a healthier and zero-carbon commute to work on new electric bikes.

Elizabeth Walker explains: “Cycling to work not only provides daily exercise for staff; it also reduces road congestion and eases pressure on local parking facilities, so it’s win-win all around. For us the tax savings were a huge incentive and show the scheme is still relevant 20 years on.”
Speaking about his first ever commute on his new Raleigh electric bike, Matt Seymour said: “It took me 50 minutes to make the 11-mile journey at rush hour, and though it takes concentration to navigate safely among the vehicles, I was delighted when the electric motor kicked in half way up Sutton Valence hill. An electric bike certainly made all the difference as a daily commute on a standard pedal bike would not be practical, and the Cycle to Work scheme provided the financial incentive for me to make the switch.”
The Cycle to Work scheme was first introduced by the government in 1999, and enables employees to spend up to £1,000 on bikes and equipment tax free, making potential savings of between 32% and 42% depending on their personal tax bracket. Employers pay for the equipment up-front, and then deduct payments from an employee’s salary in instalments, and make National Insurance savings of up to 13.8% through the scheme.
